What Storage Sense cleans by default

Open Settings > System > Storage and select Storage Sense. Microsoft says that, when enabled, it runs when the system drive is low on space and removes temporary files and eligible Recycle Bin content. Downloads and OneDrive files are not included unless you configure those rules. Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive only, so inspect Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives when a different volume is full.

Choose deletion and online-only rules

In Storage Sense, choose how often it runs, how long Recycle Bin items remain, and how long unopened Downloads files are kept. Downloads can contain active work as well as installers, so inspect the folder before enabling deletion and set a retention period that matches your workflow. OneDrive content can be made online-only after a chosen inactive period. This releases the local copy rather than deleting the cloud file, but reopening it requires connectivity. Mark files needed offline as Always keep on this device.

Practitioner perspective: define the cleanup boundary first

Windows How-To Expert Mauro Huculak’s Windows Central walkthrough shows the Windows 11 controls for enabling Storage Sense and managing its cleanup rules. Automation can reduce routine maintenance, but Downloads and the Recycle Bin may contain files someone still needs. Decide the retention period first. A cautious rollout starts with temporary-file cleanup, checks the space recovered, then adds Downloads or cloud-file rules only after confirming the work’s retention needs. Consider whether making a shared document online-only could interrupt an offline trip or job.

Verify the run and find missing content

After changing the rules, select Run Storage Sense now on the same page to inspect an immediate cleanup. If a download is missing, check the Recycle Bin; if a OneDrive item is online-only, check sync status and connectivity before opening it again. Preferences are per user, so another Windows account on the PC has separate settings. If free space barely changes, do not assume this tool cleans every drive or app cache; use Storage settings to identify the large category and volume instead.
