Set up the view

Open Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps to see programs registered to run when you sign in. Task Manager’s impact label reflects an app’s measured CPU and disk use during startup; it is a prioritization clue, not a verdict on whether the app is safe to disable. “Not measured” does not mean zero impact. Identify the publisher and purpose first, especially for security, input, accessibility, and synchronization tools.

A practical workflow

Disable an app you routinely launch yourself, but keep tools you need at sign-in, such as a required sync client or security notification component. Change one toggle, sign out or restart, then confirm whether the app stopped launching and whether dependent alerts or file sync still work. Some apps are started through a Startup folder shortcut rather than the registered-app list, so the Settings toggle is not a universal inventory of every login action.

Practitioner perspective

Microsoft documents the Settings and Task Manager controls and explains how startup impact is classified. Windows Central’s Mauro Huculak places startup review among broader Windows maintenance practices. Together, these sources support a measured workflow: correlate a high-impact label with the slowdown you actually experience instead of disabling entries indiscriminately. Removing a security component, accessibility helper, or required sync tool can create a larger problem than the delay you hoped to solve.

Exceptions and recovery

When an app still launches after its toggle is off, check its own startup preference, a Startup folder shortcut, or a work-device policy. Re-enable it on the same Settings page and verify at the next sign-in. A “We couldn’t find this app” entry can be a stale registration after uninstalling software; avoid running broad registry-cleanup instructions from an unknown source. On a managed PC, ask the administrator before changing controls, and record the app names you changed so recovery is straightforward.
