Resistance training and hypertrophy: how to read training recommendations
Understand the scope of ACSM recommendations for healthy adults and use a training log without treating one set of exercise numbers as optimal for everyone.

Record strength and muscle size separately
Resistance exercise uses muscles against an external resistance. Load-handling ability and muscle-size changes are related but different outcomes. Record load, repetitions and sets separately, and identify whether your goal concerns strength or size. More repetitions alone do not establish larger muscles.
Who the 2026 ACSM guidance addresses
The official ACSM 2026 guidance describes an updated position stand for healthy adults that replaces its 2009 recommendations. It emphasizes personal goals, safety and sustainable participation. For hypertrophy it summarizes higher weekly volume, around 10 sets per muscle group, but this is not an immediate starting volume or a proven personal optimum for every novice. Do not combine strength and hypertrophy recommendations into one mandatory prescription.
Check comparison conditions before adding complexity
The official ACSM summary sheet recommends training major muscle groups at least two days weekly and building gradually, with bands, bodyweight and home exercise among possible options. For general goals in healthy adults, momentary muscle failure, a particular equipment type or complex periodization did not consistently produce better outcomes. Before changing equipment or set counts, log actual participation, technique and recovery. The record is not an instruction to complete an excessive workload.
A log you can fill in
The following is an original tracking aid, not a measured research result.
- Date / goal / exercise: ____ / ____ / ____
- Load or resistance type / repetitions in each set: ____ / ____
- Technique maintained / pain or discomfort: ____ / ____
- Actual rest time / recovery before the next session: ____ / ____
- One condition to compare next time: ____
In a fictional comparison, more repetitions with a shorter range of motion would not by itself establish improved performance. Record comparison conditions rather than changing both load and repetitions substantially and attributing the result to one factor. This is a recordkeeping aid, not an instruction to increase load by a specific amount or a promise of results.
Health and recovery limits
Recommendations for healthy adults cannot be transferred unchanged to people with injuries or health conditions. If pain or unusual symptoms occur, do not continue merely to meet a logged target; obtain an appropriate assessment. We do not categorically ban free weights for everyone with a particular condition or declare a particular machine safe. Personal exercise choices should account for individual circumstances with an appropriate clinician or qualified instructor. This article does not replace medical care or rehabilitation planning.
