Open the options panel
The built-in Screenshot app opens with Shift-Command-5. Choose the whole screen, a window, or a selected portion, then use Options to set Save to and Timer. No separate app or permission setup is needed. Apple’s guide notes that screen-recording options can differ from screenshot options, so check the microphone setting only when recording.
Choose a destination for the task
For an image you will paste into a document immediately, hold Control with the screenshot shortcut to copy it to the clipboard. For a reusable file, choose a save location in Options. For example, capture only an error dialog and save it to a work folder before filing a support request. Include the pointer or clicks only when they help explain the steps.
To capture an open menu, press Shift-Command-4 and drag across the menu items you need. Karen Haslam’s Macworld guide compares the shortcuts with the panel and covers timed capture and window/menu techniques.
Use a timer and check the result
If a dropdown or hover control disappears when you move to capture it, choose a Timer in Options before starting. Remember the last selection when you repeatedly capture the same area; turn that option off for one-off tasks. Check that notifications or personal details are not visible before capture. Some apps may prevent screenshots of their windows. When the floating thumbnail appears, swipe it away to save immediately or click it to mark up and share.
