Check current availability before installing

LanguageTool says its Mac app includes a Safari extension, and its Mac page still presents a free version for spelling, simple punctuation, and some style checks. A separate vendor notice says its browser extension requires Premium after a 14-day trial, but it does not establish the current account or offer terms for the Safari extension bundled with the Mac app. Before installing, check the Mac App Store for compatibility with your current Mac and the displayed price or subscription terms. After installation, open Safari > Settings > Extensions, check LanguageTool to enable it, then review the features and payment terms shown after sign-in. Do not assume the two vendor statements describe the same offer. Apple’s Safari 12+ requirement is the platform baseline for App Store Safari extensions, not LanguageTool’s minimum macOS version.

Limit site access

After enabling the extension, review its website access in Safari’s Extensions settings. Allow or deny access by site, then test the text field where you plan to write. An extension can read webpage content, so check LanguageTool’s privacy notice and workplace policy before using it with confidential drafts or customer information. Installation alone does not guarantee that every field will receive suggestions.

Decide whether each suggestion fits

For example, when a short customer reply receives a spelling suggestion, check that the edit preserves names, product terms, meaning, and tone. Translated or mixed-language writing can produce false positives. Macworld’s hands-on feature treats LanguageTool as a way to surface grammar and spelling issues, not as a guarantee that every sentence is correct.

Pause or remove the extension

To pause it, uncheck LanguageTool under Safari > Settings > Extensions. To remove it, select it there and choose Uninstall. If you only need it on a few sites, block other site access and allow only those sites. Removing the extension may not cancel a separate LanguageTool or App Store subscription; manage that separately through the relevant account.
