Type and purpose
A Safari extension adds a browser feature and is commonly distributed inside an app from the Mac App Store. Find candidates through Safari’s extension discovery, install the app, then enable the item in Safari Settings > Extensions. Installing an app does not necessarily activate its browser component, so check both steps.
Install and review access
When you first enable an extension, read its access prompt and look for an option to limit access to selected sites rather than every site. Permission to read or change page content should match the advertised task. If the product does not explain why it needs that access, pause and check the developer’s guidance.
Professional perspective: compare behavior
Macworld’s Stephan Wiesend tests Safari extensions and explains where Mac users can find and manage them. The useful lesson is not to infer behavior from the word “extension.” Compare the stated task, developer, and requested access before installing; adding one item at a time also makes troubleshooting clearer.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
If a site breaks or a button stops responding, disable the newest item in Safari Settings and reload the same page. The companion app and Safari toggle are separate, and macOS updates can move controls. A management profile may restrict work Macs, so follow Apple’s current guide and your organization’s policy.
