Check cold-weather shutdown, charging and condensation separately
A cold shutdown and a wet device need different checks. Read model-specific limits and prepare navigation information that remains available without your phone.

Do not treat every shutdown as a need to charge
A device can shut down in cold weather with charge still indicated. Identify its model, ambient conditions, temperature or charging message, and any wetness before acting. Apple's guidance gives a 0–35°C operating range for iPhone and iPad and describes temporary battery-life reduction, shutdown and interrupted charging in cold conditions. Do not extend that specification to every camera or power bank.
Prepare one record per device
A phone, camera and spare battery in the same bag may have different limits. Fill in the following from each manual and save the relevant instructions offline.
- Model ____ / operating and storage temperatures ____ / permitted charging temperature ____.
- Temperature message ____ / instructions for power and charging if condensation appears ____.
- Removable battery ____ / manufacturer storage and terminal-protection method ____.
- Hotel address, station name and contact information available if the phone shuts down ____.
Operating and storage limits are not interchangeable. Adding a power bank does not override the phone's charging-temperature restrictions. The record is also a reminder not to keep every navigation or contact detail on one battery-powered device.
Use the model's instructions when moving indoors
The Sony FDR-X1000V/HDR-AS200V manual describes sealing a cold camera in a plastic bag while it reaches the warmer surroundings' temperature. If condensation occurs, it says to turn the camera off and wait. This is a model-specific example, not a universal one-hour guarantee. Check whether your own manual gives that method. Snow or water on a device is not simply a cold-temperature problem.
Do not override charging warnings or try to warm equipment rapidly with a heat pack, hair dryer or heater. Checking its instructions takes priority over reconnecting a charger while the permitted temperature and dryness remain uncertain. If the warning persists at normal temperature or internal moisture is uncertain, seek manufacturer support.
Fictional situation: arriving indoors after outdoor navigation
Imagine a traveler carrying an iPhone and the Sony camera above. The phone shuts down while displaying a map, and the camera lens appears foggy after entering a lodge. Do not assign the same cause or waiting time to both. Check the phone's messages against Apple guidance and stop camera use while following its condensation instructions. Use a printed address or a companion's route information for the immediate journey. Verify each device's normal condition before resuming shooting or charging. This describes a checking sequence, not a field test or successful recovery.
Record what remains unknown
Time ____ / model ____ / last message ____ / cold, wetness or indoor transition ____ / action taken ____ / recheck result ____. A recovered charge indicator does not establish the absence of damage or predict remaining operating time. If normal function does not return, preserve the uncertain status for support rather than assuming a spare device makes a hazardous itinerary safe to continue.
