Prevent Overlapping Reservations with PostgreSQL Range Exclusions
A GiST exclusion constraint can reject overlapping intervals for the same resource. Boundary, NULL, empty-range, and version rules still need deliberate design.

An application-side availability query can race: two requests may both see an open slot before either writes. PostgreSQL range types and exclusion constraints let the database enforce a non-overlap rule across rows. Use the PostgreSQL 18 range documentation and [CREATE TABLE reference](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/sql-createtable.html) as the primary sources; Cybertec’s specialist explanation adds operational context.
Choose a range type and boundary rule
PostgreSQL provides ranges for integers, dates, numerics, and timestamps. Choose tsrange for timestamps without time zone or tstzrange for time-zone-aware instants. PostgreSQL stores the latter internally as UTC and does not retain the originally supplied zone name. If the original civil-time zone matters later, store its IANA identifier separately. A range records inclusive or exclusive bounds. For scheduling, a half-open interval such as [start, end) allows one booking to begin exactly when another ends. Decide the business meaning of endpoints and time-zone conversion before choosing the column type.
Declare the overlap rule
To prevent two bookings for the same room from overlapping, install btree_gist and define a constraint such as EXCLUDE USING gist (room WITH =, during WITH &&). The && operator tests range overlap; = compares the resource. Since a conflicting pair must satisfy every comparison, another room can be booked at the same time while an overlapping interval for that room is rejected. The constraint creates an index and relies on suitable operator classes and extension availability.
Decide how to handle NULL and empty ranges
An exclusion constraint permits a pair when at least one comparison is false or NULL. If resource and interval are required, declare them NOT NULL separately. An empty range may overlap nothing; an unbounded endpoint may express an open-ended interval. Decide whether the application accepts these values and add appropriate constraints when it does not. Remember that a CHECK expression evaluating to NULL does not reject a row by itself.
Check version and operational behavior
This example is scoped to PostgreSQL 18 range and EXCLUDE documentation. Do not assume newer syntax such as WITHOUT OVERLAPS exists on older server versions. Partitioned tables have restrictions involving partition keys, and btree_gist supplies GiST operator classes for scalar comparisons. Check extension privileges, existing rows, migration locks, and constraint validation on the actual target version in staging. An availability query can improve the interface, but the database constraint is what protects against concurrent writes.
Example declaration and error handling
For room reservations, make the rule explicit in the schema:
CREATE EXTENSION btree_gist;
CREATE TABLE reservation (
room text NOT NULL,
during tstzrange NOT NULL,
EXCLUDE USING gist (room WITH =, during WITH &&)
);
This narrows PostgreSQL’s documented room-and-range example by requiring both values. Check extension privileges, server version, and time-zone representation before applying it; validate the migration in staging. An overlapping insert for the same room violates the constraint. Translate that conflict into a useful response, but do not label every database error as a reservation conflict. Naming the constraint makes logs easier to interpret.
Expert perspective: the constraint belongs in the data model
CYBERTEC PostgreSQL International treats an exclusion constraint as an integrity rule that protects competing writes, not merely a query optimization. Its examples involving partial rules and custom operators require checking operator-class and version conditions rather than copying them blindly. Before deployment, inspect existing rows and handle conflicts explicitly as constraint violations.
