Will an International Driving Permit issued in Korea let you drive anywhere as soon as you land? No. Check the destination’s accepted convention format, local rules, and rental contract first. An IDP does not replace your Korean licence. Korea’s Road Traffic Authority tells drivers abroad to carry the IDP, Korean licence, and passport together. KoROAD guidance
1. Confirm the destination’s accepted format
Check which road-traffic convention the destination or territory follows and whether it recognizes the format Korea issues. The IDP repository lists convention status and accepted formats by jurisdiction, while warning that law and administrative practice can change. Use the FIA/AIT repository as a starting point, then verify against the destination’s transport authority or embassy. Repeat the check for every country where you plan to drive, including transit stops. A country appearing in a list does not settle visitor eligibility, vehicle class, or length of stay by itself.
2. Apply in Korea and check the clock
KoROAD’s current instructions allow applications at driver licensing examination offices and police stations, as well as online. For an in-person application, it lists a passport (a copy is acceptable), Korean driver’s licence, and one passport-style colour photo taken within six months. Confirm that your chosen location handles the service and check the current online application limit before relying on it. A Korean IDP is valid for one year from issue, but KoROAD also cautions that treaty provisions and local law may affect recognition after entry. The destination can impose a shorter visiting-driver period. Do not calculate your permitted driving stay from the IDP expiry date alone.
3. Match the documents and rental terms
Suppose you plan to pick up a rental car on June 20. Before booking, work through this list:
- Verify that the destination and any transit country recognize the Korean-issued format. Look for separate local licence, translation, registration, or time-limit requirements.
- Compare the spelling of your name and signature on the IDP with your Korean licence and passport. KoROAD warns that a spelling mismatch may affect recognition.
- Ask the rental company about minimum driver age, licence-holding period, vehicle class, additional drivers, and which original documents must be shown. Legal permission to drive and contractual eligibility to collect a car are separate checks.
- Compare your departure and final driving dates with the issue date, expiry date, and any shorter local visiting-driver limit. Keep paper copies and secure digital copies separately.
Treat convention status as a starting point, not a summary of all local traffic law. Rules may vary by state or territory, including in countries such as the United States and Canada, so identify the exact place where you will drive. If an authority’s current guidance is unclear, resolve that question before booking. An IDP or rental confirmation alone does not guarantee that you may drive.
