Review Energy recommendations and apply only the changes that fit
Inspect power-related settings in one place, then choose display, USB, and sleep changes that suit the actual device and workload.

Setup and conditions
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Microsoft says the list varies with the device, whether it is plugged in, and available sensors. A desktop therefore may not show the same choices as a battery-powered laptop; a missing recommendation is not automatically a fault. Expand each item to see its effect, and apply changes individually so you can identify which one altered behavior.
A workflow to try
For mobile work, review screen brightness and power mode first. If the laptop is frequently left unattended, inspect screen-off and sleep timing. Compare the result over a normal work cycle rather than assuming that every suggestion is suitable. Brightness recommendations do not control external displays. The USB suggestion can stop USB devices while the screen is off, so test it before relying on an external drive, dock, or other device during a locked or sleeping session.
Practitioner perspective
Windows How-To Expert Mauro Huculak’s Windows Central guide shows how to inspect app battery use, which helps identify where a drain investigation should begin. Pair that diagnostic view with Windows’ recommendations: reduce avoidable consumption without treating maximum savings as the only objective. For color-critical photo or video work, an automatic brightness-and-contrast change can affect visual judgment; leave that recommendation unapplied or turn it back off if it disrupts the task.
Limits and checks
Ambient-light and presence-based options require compatible sensors. Some brightness options are not offered for external monitors, and certain display or USB recommendations are unavailable on devices without batteries. If a peripheral stops responding or the screen becomes too dim, return to this page and reverse that one setting. Battery runtime also depends on battery health, workload, radios, and connected hardware; the recommendations do not promise a fixed runtime.
